Biography

Reverend Gary Davis, also known as Blind Gary Davis, was a highly influential American blues and gospel musician. Born in 1896 in South Carolina, Davis was blinded as an infant. Despite his disability, he became a talented self-taught musician, mastering the guitar, banjo, and harmonica.

Davis began his musical career playing on the streets and in churches, eventually becoming a preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. His unique blend of blues, ragtime, and gospel music captivated audiences and fellow musicians alike. Davis’ intricate fingerpicking style and powerful vocals set him apart as a true virtuoso of his craft.

Throughout his career, Davis recorded numerous albums and performed at folk festivals and concert halls around the world. His songs, such as “I Am the Light of the World” and “Samson and Delilah,” have been covered by countless artists and remain classics of the blues and gospel genres.

Reverend Gary Davis left behind a lasting legacy as a master musician and preacher, influencing generations of musicians with his soulful music and profound lyrics. He passed away in 1972, but his music continues to inspire and uplift listeners to this day.
